Can I use it in a physical Apple Store?

Yes, but not by handing over the code. Once you link a card to your Apple Account, the balance moves into your Apple Account balance and the code itself stops working, including in Apple retail stores. What you use instead is the card in Wallet. When you redeem a gift card, the funds are added to your Apple Account card in Wallet, which you can use to check your balance and pay in store or in the App Store. This needs an iPhone or Apple Watch that supports Apple Pay and is signed in to the same account. You can also spend the balance by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE.

Can I add more than one card, and how do I check what is left?

You can add as many as you like. Every card and code linked to your account feeds the same Apple Account balance, along with any funds you add directly. There is no separate card to keep track of once a code is redeemed. To check what is left before redeeming, call 1-800-MY-APPLE or visit the Apple Help Center. After redeeming, your balance shows on the Apple Account card in Wallet. One thing to plan for: you have to spend your balance before you can close your Apple Account.

Can I pay for Apple Music, iCloud+ or other subscriptions with it?

Yes, for most of them. Your balance covers subscriptions such as Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple TV, iCloud+ and eligible App Store subscriptions. There is one exception worth planning around. Some recurring charges, including AppleCare+, cannot be started using your balance, though once another valid payment method is on file and your balance covers the full charge, the renewal will be taken from the balance. Apple also notes that some purchases may require a credit card on file even when you are paying from your balance.

Can my family use the balance?

No, and this catches people out. Apple states that if you use Family Sharing, your family members cannot spend your Apple Account balance, and funds added to it are available only to you. If you want someone else to have the credit, give them the code before it is redeemed rather than redeeming it yourself. Once a code is linked to an account, the balance belongs to that account, and an unused balance is not transferable.

Can I use it outside Apple, or exchange it for cash?

Accepted Answer

No. Apple gift cards can only be used to buy products and services from Apple, and Apple warns that anyone asking you to pay them with an Apple gift card is running a scam. That includes third-party shops and carrier stores. The credit is also not redeemable for cash, cannot be resold or exchanged, and cannot be used to buy other gift cards.
