Question 1

Can I use one card for both Uber rides and Uber Eats?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and this is the main advantage of an Uber gift card. When you redeem it, the value becomes Uber Cash, which is a single balance that works across both Uber and Uber Eats. There is no separate food balance or ride balance to manage. Whether your next order is a trip or a meal, Uber draws from the same Uber Cash automatically. You can redeem the code in either the Uber app or the Uber Eats app, and it makes no difference to how the credit works.

Question 2

Do I still need a credit card on my account to use it?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Uber requires a valid payment method, such as a credit card, to stay on the account even when you have Uber Cash from a gift card. The gift card balance is used first at checkout, but Uber keeps a card on file as a backup, for example when a fare comes to more than your remaining credit. So the gift card reduces what you pay from your own card, but it does not remove the need to have one on the account.

Question 3

What can't I use the balance for?

Accepted Answer

Uber Cash from a gift card covers rides and Uber Eats orders, but not everything on the platform. It cannot be used for cash tips to your driver or courier, for family profiles, or for scheduled rides. It also cannot settle an outstanding balance already owed on the account. For standard rides and food or grocery orders, which is what most people buy it for, the credit applies with no issue.

Question 4

Does the balance expire, and what if I don't spend it all at once?

Accepted Answer

Uber gift card credit does not expire, so there is no rush to use it. If a ride or an order costs less than your balance, the rest stays on your account as Uber Cash and applies to your next trip or order. You can keep adding more cards as your credit runs low, though a card cannot be reloaded once it is used up. There is a cap on how much gift card credit an account can hold at one time, so very large top-ups may need to be spent down before you add more.

Question 5

Can I move the credit to someone else once I've redeemed it?

Accepted Answer

No. Once a gift card is added to an account, the credit belongs to that account and cannot be transferred to another. So if you meant the card as a gift, pass the code to the person before it is redeemed rather than adding it to your own account first. A redeemed balance also cannot be refunded or converted to cash, and a lost or stolen card cannot be replaced, so treat the code carefully until you use it.
